The Story of Silk is lost in centuries and it is interwoven with Chinese legends.
There is a legend which lies back to 2690 BC and it is referred to the
Empress Shi Ling Chi trying to take a cocoon out of her teacup which had been dropped in ; that was when it started unwinding to a durable fibre ; it is said to be the first silk fibre.
Since then the production started which was a really exclusive privilege of the Courtyard.Any illegal transfer for cultivation out of its limits meant death penalty.
There is another story about the Tibetan king Khotan who after having been married to a Chinese Empress asked her to deny her silk habiliments due to the fact that he could not provide her this precious material. He could find it nowhere else but the Empress’s home.
Unwilling to renounce her sumptuous woven not only did the Empress leave the Kingdom hidding mulberry seeds in her hair – the only food that a silkworm needs – but she also put silkworm eggs for hatching. Therefore, the secret , which the Chinese people were hidding for years , was revealed and spread to the rest of the world. Thus, that is how women and men from all over the world were satisfied to wear this special fabric.
During the Roman Empire , silk was equal to gold and precious stones.
At the beginning of the 1900’s the king silkworm found its paradise in the vast area of fields of the traditional small greek village of Mouries ( Μουριά /muria/ means mulberry tree in greek ).That was the beginning of the silk production in this small paradise which still gives the finest quality of silk worldwide.
Why silk?
Silk is considered to be one of the most luxurious fabrics and not by chance. It can be ascertained just by touching it. Its velvet texture and its soft touch on the skin reveals a unique sensation of satisfaction and sense
It is these combined properties which give satin fabrics such an ethereal shimmery quality. It makes a woman feel like an Empress.
It is not accidental that Haute Couture Houses use it to creat all those great aesthetical collections and that is due to its special shiness.
Properties of silk
Beyond its fine texture , silk is probably the unique textile that is hypoallergenic because of its lack of chemical elements
Silk is wrinkle and tear resistant, and dries quickly. Because of its protein structure, silk is the most hypoallergenic of all fabrics. That means it’s less likely to cause allergic reactions to the wearer.
